About this production
Step into a high-stakes, dual-world battleground where a century-old classic transforms into a modern manifesto for youth activism. Bohemios completely reimagines Amadeo Vives' legendary 1904 zarzuela into a thrilling contemporary story of rebellion, identity, and LGBTQ+ authenticity. The production clashes across two contrasting spaces: a glossy, superficial film "SET" mirroring the empty perfection of social media, and "NOW," a raw, self-managed neighborhood refuge called Sisterland. As a group of young artists battle corporate manipulation and fight for self-expression, the physical barriers between fiction and reality dissolve into an explosive collective demonstration of solidarity. Rich in energy and social justice, it proves that classical tradition can be the ultimate vehicle for modern ethics.
Presented by the Teatro de la Zarzuela to mark the milestone tenth season of 'Proyecto Zarza' (zarzuela by young people and for young people), this large-scale opera features a bold new libretto by Nando López and striking stage direction by Nicola Beller Carbone, with the original score vibrantly performed by the Young National Orchestra of Spain (JONDE).
